Out With the Old: 2021 Trend Forecasting
Written By: Kaelin Trombly
Finally, the moment we have all been waiting for: 2021. Along with the many changes that come along with the new year, we can expect many changes to our wardrobes as new trends surface. By following major brands as they strut down the fashion capital runways, it is evident that new trends for the 2021 season are arising. From baggy trousers to tight bralette tops, here are this year’s top ten predicted trends:
Black & White Everything. The combo of black and white seems so simple yet is by far one of the most elegant color pairings out there. Like yin and yang, the two complement one another and create the ultimate minimalist look. Black and white monochrome was even the front runner of Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear show. Whether you’re rocking black jeans and a simple white tee or a bold checkered dress, black and white monochrome is here to stay.
Underwear as Outerwear. We’ve seen the built in G-string trend this past season, but we’ve moved onto bigger and better things- the bralette. I’m sure we’ve all heard of bralettes before but this time they’re coming into 2021 as the top itself. We are taking cropped tops to a whole new level. Whether plain and minimalist or colorful and flirty, bralettes are bringing an optimistic vibe this year.
Midriff Flossing. Midriff flossing is loosely translated as a series of crisscrossed cords and wrap around details resembling dental floss that wrap around the abdominal area. These cords may emerge from your top or skirt or dress and thanks to Versace, they aren’t going anywhere.
Flowy Maxi Dresses. Forget body con dresses this season, because flowy is back. Expect floor sweeping dresses made of flowy sheer materials to rule the runways. This almost romanticized look has already been seen at Dior, Valentino, and Erdem and will definitely save me from sucking in the pizza I just ate.
Baggy Trousers. The mom jean trend has been around for a while now, but this time it's being taken to the next level. When I say baggy trousers are in, I mean baggy trousers are really in. Picture wide legged, shoe covering pants.
Disco Sequin. It’s the return of disco! High end fashion houses including Balmain, Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Celine are sporting laid back sequin outfits. Whether you wear a sparkly baggy dress or sequin pants, this trend is supposed to represent relaxed glamour.
Capes. Capes are trending this year, and I am not talking about the Superman kind. As one of 2021’s more out there projected fads, wrap around capes paired with an elegant evening gown has been making runway appearances.
Cutouts. Cutouts are working their way into sheath dresses, slippery silks, and gowns in order to spice up originally conservative looks. The peekaboos of skin appear along the hips and rib cage of your clothing and are widely supported by Fendi and Carolina Herrera.
Corsets are BACK. Let's give a quick shout out to the Victorian age, because corsets are making a comeback. This time, however, corsets are being used as a fashion statement rather than being used for torso training now that we are woke and know that all bodies are beautiful. Corsets are being incorporated into dresses, and are even worn above a plain tshirt as an accessory.
SOCKS AND SANDALS. No, I am not joking. Socks and sandals are ruling the 2021 fashion runways and I am here for it. My favorite projected 2021 trend so far, socks and strappy sandals are a chic yet dorky look that I cannot wait to try. To achieve this look, pair strappy sandals or heels with slightly rolled down calf socks.
There you have it! Some of the top ten 2021 fashion trends are here. Now go out and play around with these new fads, because to be frank, what else is there to do nowadays.
