The Met Gala was held on Tuesday, September 13th, in no other than New York City. The "Met" is a night where A-List celebrities convene at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and display their dramatic, unique, and personalized ideas of fashion. This event is held by Anna Wintour, British-American journalist who has served as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue since 1988. This year's theme was "In America: A Lexicon in Fashion", this theme coincidentally is in relation to the 20-year anniversary of 9/11, which was two days prior to the gala.

Many celebrities had their own take on this theme; some hit the mark, some missed it. The celebrities that showed the true meaning of the theme in their own way stood out tremendously, such as Zoe Kravitz, Billie Eilish, and Lupita Nyong'o. For example, Zoe Kravitz put a spin on exposed underwear in a mesh, bejeweled Saint Laurent number. This see-through moment exposed Kravitz' full body, making a daring statement. This look relates back to the theme for which Kravitz said she feels as though women in America have been burdened by clothes in the past. Expressing confidence through revealing garments in 2021 is empowering for women in America.

In relation, Billie Eilish's beautiful ball gown had her looking unrecognizable from her usual attire. This was a tribute to American film in the 1950's such as Marilyn Monroe, who was an all-time feminine icon for American beauty. Billie Eilish has always been one to cover much skin when it comes to red carpets. She stated that she has finally become comfortable in her own skin and felt inspired by Marilyn Monroe who was one of the first American women to show off her curves in the 50's. The gown took months to finish and was designed by Oscar de la Renta.

Lastly, Lupita Nyong'o, a native of Kenya, was draped in patched denim, bedazzled gown designed by Donatella Versace. Nyong'o stated she wanted to wear a denim look because "nothing represents American fashion more than denim." Her hair was styled by Vernon François, who wanted her to make a tribute to African American women living in Brooklyn in the 70's. Overall, these outfits were authentic and cohesive, genuinely embracing the theme.
