Halloween 2022 Trend Predictions

Happy Halloween! It’s always been my favorite holiday. I grew up in New York City, so Halloween has always been a big thing here. The decorations, trick or treating, and especially the costumes make it the best time of year. Seeing as this is the first unmasked Halloween since the pandemic, people will go all out. Here’s what I think will be the most seen costumes this year.

The first thing I think will be the biggest trend is pop culture, specifically characters from television and film. This year was one of the biggest for new shows and movies, and there definitely will be many costumes based off of those. I think we will see many characters from Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Game of Thrones, and more. Something else I have seen a lot of is people being final girls from horror movies, such as Sidney from Scream and Laurie from Halloween. I already know that this will be a big trend because myself and many of my friends are dressing up as final girls. Personally, I’m going to be Carrie and Jennifer Check from Jennifer’s Body.

Another big trend is duo costumes, usually based on pop culture, but can also be extremely random. I think there will be a lot of Velma and Daphne from Scooby Doo, White and Black Swan, and maybe Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy (because Harley Quinn is always popular). Also, there’s this fun trend on Tiktok that I only saw this year; people have been dressing up as things that rhyme, called Rhyme Without Reason. I saw a group dress up as Santa and Fanta, and another dress up as Quarterback and Lumberjack. This year is definitely going to see quirky costumes, with a lot of influence from Tiktok.

I feel like another trend that I have seen is easy-to-make costumes, with stuff you have in your closet. Some people lose track of time and are too busy to go to the store to buy a costume. Unfortunately, that was me last year, so I had to piece together a random costume. I was able to find a blue dress and some red ballet flats, so I went as a makeshift Dorothy.

Second, I think that essential workers will be a popular costume. Ever since the pandemic began, people started to appreciate essential workers more. I don’t think anyone used to dress up as a UPS or FedEx driver, but the pandemic ushered that in. I think it's great that essential workers are being noticed, and it makes for a cute costume too.

Halloween is only two weeks away, so people should start planning their costumes! I’m excited to see the costumes that will be on campus this year!
