Fendi: Reimagining Fashion Weeks Globally
Written By: Kathleen Donnelly
After living in London for the summer and having the opportunity to travel to other cities like Milan and Paris, I noticed a significant difference in their fashion styles. While it is generally clear that American fashion is very different and more casual than European fashion, the differences between individual European countries were more diverse than I expected.
After experiencing many fashion trends this summer, I was curious to see how prevalent this would be within the upcoming fashion weeks. That being said, as September comes to an end, so do the spring/summer fashion weeks. Given that may luxury brands canceled their London’s fashion week due to the Queen’s passing, I decided to dive deeper into the similarities between New York and Milan. There are so many different designers at each show with different styles, and one designer who had a show at both fashion weeks was Fendi.
Fendi’s New York show was dedicated to celebrating their infamous Baguette Bag. This bag was first released 25 years ago and was styled with an abundance of layers, representing the bag’s multiple pockets and functionality, and a lot of shimmer & sequins. The 2000s were known for excess and Fendi accurately portrayed this inspiration of the 2000s and the lifestyle that the bag first entered into. The overall show mainly featured neutral tones with an occasional pop of color within the accessories or the overall look. In addition to the neutral colors, the palette consisted of yellow-green and pink-purple. Towards the end of the show, the last 10 models were wearing very large fur hats. While these looks showed more of Fendi’s comfort outfits, the hats continued to portray the theme of the 2000s and the excess that comes with it due to the sheer size of the headwear.
In contrast, Fendi dedicated their Milan Fashion week to the 90s. To start, their venue was full of color displaying bright green, pink, and a darker purple. The outfits featured neutral colors, similar to the New York show, with bright colors as accent pieces & outfits. The outfits took casual to the next level adding a casual chic vibe to the collection. The collection featured silk paired with various items of clothing of a different material. To add to the causal but classy vibe, all of the models had very natural flowing hair.
While Fendi’s overall collection has a similar palette, it will be interesting to see if either of these trends, bringing back the 90s or 2000s, will be more prevalent in the future. In addition, I am curious to see how the different countries interpret these varying incoming fashion trends.
