Athletic wear. . . and Why it’s Everywhere

For the past few months, while scrolling through some of my favorite clothing brands’ websites, I have noticed a common trend across almost every site - an addition of an activewear line.

Thinking back to a year or two ago (pre-pandemic), all my workout clothes were mainly bought from the same three athletic brands of Nike, Adidas, and the occasional splurge on Lululemon. Fast forward two years, my closet is filled with colorful and patterned matching sets, leggings, and sports bras. This category of fashion has become an obsession of mine.

This leads to the question of why was there a sudden shift from the classic black workout short and bright colored tank? The answer: COVID-19 and the way we have ditched uncomfortable formal wear and replaced it with biker shorts, matching workout sets, and cute joggers that are much more fitting and comfortable, for our virtual and socially distanced lifestyles.

A specific example of one of these brands that has fully invested in creating a popular athletic line is a favorite of mine, Free People. Free People has completely changed the face of the workout short with their new “The Way Home Shorts.” Not only do the fabric of these shorts bear well to a good sweat, but the smocked waist into the flowy short is flattering for every body type.

From Forever 21 to Dolce and Gabanna, activewear lines are becoming a must for every brand.
